Children’s ability and deliberate practice

Winner, Gifted Children, 145-6

Those children who have the most ability are probably those who are most interested in a particular activity, who begin to work at that activity at an early age, who work the hardest at it, and who can most profit from practice.  One is likely to want to work hard at something when one is able to advance quickly with relatively little effort, but not when every step is a painful struggle.  One cannot get a more typical child to sit at a piano for hours or to work on math puzzles all day…Their fortunate combination of obsessional perseverance and high ability is what leads to their remarkable achievements.
